Porsche Macan S 2015 · Fast and furious, with sports car performance, · Easy and huge fun to drive, · Loaded with options and ready for a discerning owner, · The lines are gorgeous. When Porsche started making SUVs, enthusiasts turned puce with outrage and sputtered helplessly. Nothing but a sports car is a Porsche, they insisted, which, of course, is nonsense. Porsche’s SUV’s are the bestselling automobiles in the line, and demand is exploding. The Macan is the smaller of the two, still less familiar than the Cayenne, but sales are hot as more and more people move into crossovers rather than sedans or station wagons. I drove an S, which is the most popular and most in demand of the breed. Macans are based on the Audi Q5 platform, but you wouldn’t know it on the road, Porsche having tweaked it considerably. A three-liter twin-turbo V6 and 340 horsepower power plant fairly thrust you down the road. The seven-speed PDK transmission with steering wheel paddles allows you to ring gear changes with alacrity. You ease yourself into very comfortable seats that keep you firmly planted in place when the cornering becomes aggressive. I was impressed that you could adjust the seats for either a low position (think hatchback) or high (think SUV). The space at the rear is larger than you might think, especially if you fold down the rear seats. The two rows of buttons on the center console hold your attention at once. They remind you of a Boeing 747 cockpit. But you figure them out quickly enough, even if there is scope for simplifying them in future models. I drove through thick traffic in a thoroughly docile matter, the engine quiet, but instantly at hand if required. Freeway travel in seventh gear is quiet and comfortable, although you have to watch your speed. This is a seriously fast freeway automobile that laughs at our speed limits. Cruise control calls! You soon forget that you are in a performance SUV, especially when you push Sport and head for the hills. The Macan becomes a very fast small car in an instant, utterly controlled yet very fast. The steering is taut and precise, exactly what one would expect from a Porsche. This makes hairpin cornering and slaloms a true delight. The car grips the pavement firmly as you jet out of a sharp bend. You never feel anxious, so sure footed is the Macan. On my favorite straight with my foot firmly down, we took off with a wonderful shrieking from the engine at high revs in second and third. The Macan becomes jet propelled as you put your foot down, always with impeccable manners and the kind of handling that Porsche has made its own. If you like fast driving, this is really a pinnacle. It’s hard to believe that you’re driving an SUV, used to running chores at the mall. The Macan is a superb daily driver for a couple or a small family, capable of handling quite a large amount of baggage. You can even tow with it, which will appeal to small boat owners and others. Porsches are driver’s cars, but this is an exceptionally easy automobile to drive—do take your time before going flat out as there’s a learning curve. It is businesslike inside, and a delight to gaze upon. This lovely SUV or crossover, take your choice, will appeal to a broad spectrum of drivers of both sexes. Macans are expensive, but are selling well, with small wonder. This 2015 example in black has 91,000 miles on it and is absolutely spotless. It’s laden with a broad range of options, including navigation. This an ideal purchase for someone looking to enter the Porsche world at a relatively affordable trice. There are many thousands of reliable miles awaiting you. Drive this for a few years, then purchase another, new one. I’m pretty confident saying this, for Macans are addictive in the extreme. This is a very attractively priced example, offered considerably cheaper than competitors in the marketplace. Most strongly recommended both as a lovely SUV and an
